Week #15 - Spoken Word Slam Semi-Finals and Finals! Top 13 of 2013....and Break!

Happy Holidays Writers and Poets!

I hope this update finds you well and thinking reflectively and creatively.  What an amazing week of poems, words, statements, observations, skills, techniques, group creativity, and effort!  I think we were all truly impressed by the quality and vulnerability that our classmates and fellow writers were willing to share.  I am eagerly anticipating some fantastic pieces as we finish up this session of Spoken Word/Poetry.  I look forward to where this momentum will take us as we head into 2014 and our remaining time together in Writers Workshop.

You are expected to be writing individually and independently.  Take advantage of opportunities to advocate for yourself. Your last minute concerns will not be mine.  If you are worried about your efforts, grade, missing assignments, etc....THIS is the week to be seen and heard.

* You will be allowed to take your Manilla Folder home over the break  w/all of your turned in work thus far from the semester.  You can revise assignments, make up missing assignment, etc....

* Let's celebrate our writing community, the end of a great year, and the beginning of 2014!

It is truly a privilege to be your teacher and mentor and fellow writer.  Continue to expect the best from yourself and one another.  The new year will bring forth plenty of new creative writing assignments to explore individually and together.  Take advantage of these authentic opportunities to navigate new perspectives and to take genuine cosmic risks.  Remember that good writing is the willingness to play, have fun, and experiment; though the focus should always be on revising, improving and expanding.

Work hard, play hard!  Write on!

Hello Poets!

Thank you for checking the blog.  The next two weeks are rather straightforward.  Your attendance, participation, WRG's, writing, and Slam performance are essential to your success.  Please make sure that you are advocating for yourself and working to the best of your abilities.  This is the ONLY way you can ensure an ABOVE AVERAGE grade in our class and workshop.  Demonstrate persistence and effort and you will do just fine.  I believe in you.

Thank you to those who came out to the Poets Meet Poets event at PLHS this past Saturday.  We had a turn-out of 25 enthusiastic writers.  We had amazing guests.  Rudy Francisco stopped by to perform and to offer advice and support.  It was a great day and we are planning a similar activity in February. You should attend if you can!

Office Hours - After school or by appointment. Speak up now.
Poetry Club - Wednesday after school.

Mon/Tues
* Sacred Writing Time
* WRG - Slam Teams. Write, Revise, Plan, Prep, Practice, Strategize...
* You will be graded for your efforts and teamwork. Demonstrate the ability to work towards success.

Weds/Thurs/Friday
* Spoken Word Slam - Round One - All NINE teams will perform.  Be ready to present your work.
Each team will turn in typed copies of their individual poems and their group piece...date to be determined.  With the group piece, make sure to highlight/indicate the lines/parts that each group member wrote/performed.
* Inspirational Texts will be shared sometime this week.  Please be ready. Failure to do so will result in a non completion grade for this assignment.

The FOUR teams with the highest averaged scored will advance to the Second Round.  This begins on Monday 12/16.  Instructions and directions will be given in class as we move toward this date.  Remember that the winning team will receive an A on the spoken word unit - as long as work is turned in neatly and on time.

Take advantage of your time to write and receive feedback.  You are expected to incorporate diction/style/technique of the poets/poems we have studied/read/viewed as mentor texts.

Here is a link to the Def Poetry Channel on Youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuAbGJBvIVY&list=PL53810C8D59ED71BB

The first poem is "Hands" by Sarah Kaye.  Sarah is an awesome poet and you can learn a lot by watching her.  Her content is amazing and her ability to perform is top notch.  Check out all the other poets/musicians and links to other examples of excellence in the spoken word genre.

Here is a link to Sarah's TED Talk.  This is worth your time as well.
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0snNB1yS3IE

Extra Credit Opportunity - Write a 1-2 page typed reflection on Sarah's purpose/poems/style/intent.  Who is she as a writer? What makes her so good?  Why is it important that young writers look to mentors like her? Turn this in by Friday.  I will not ask for it...so you must literally put it in my hands.

Top 13 of 2013 is due on Thursday 12/19.  Your work must be typed/error free/ and publishable.  You have a lot of freedom and range with your writing topics and choice of presentation.  Make sure that your work is reflective and demonstrates critical thinking and creative writing.  You can write journal entries, stories, poems.  Learn from the styles/techniques of our previous studies and mentor texts. Revisit Klosterman, take a look at the "Ultimate Guides" we wrote.  Be unique and honor yout NINE rights as a writer.

Week #12 - Sestinas, Rolland, Returned Work, Spoken Word, and Authors Chair

Hello Seniors!

I am grateful for being able to work with you every single day.  It is amazing that we are 1/4 of the way through our school year and our time together.  Let's continue to grow as writers and thinkers - staying open to new ideas and being willing to try new and different approaches to finding our most authentic voice.

Take advantage of opportunities to improve your class status and grade.  I know this is important - however work ethic and a willingness to "be the process" is what we are working towards.  Participate in daily classwork and activities and share your writing.  Be sure to reflect on what is working for you stylistically and be okay with your endeavors that are less successful.

Office Hours/Tutoring - Monday/Wednesday after school.
* If you need to meet at another time - please schedule this with me accordingly.

Additional Credit Activities - completion of these writing assignments will contribute to your improvements as a writer (the over-arching goal of our class).  It is highly suggested that if you are in hopes of attaining an A in the class for the semester that you take advantage of these opportunities.  The deadline to submit these works is MONDAY 12/2.  However, revise and resubmit work is open indefinitely - you can expect a January deadline.  You WILL also get additional credit if these works become part of your Semester Portfolio - which you will submit in January on Midterms/Finals Day.

*** All assignments must be typed and publishable works
* Letter to LTAB Poet - Dear Nova, Lamar, Adam, Nate (1-2 pages in length)
* Grateful List - based of off our Sacred Writing prompt - (5-10 worthwhile entries of gratitude)
* Revise and Resubmit - Any Writing Invites, Personal Statement, etc... (you must submit your work with the original piece...you must have a reflection on what you have changed and why it is now a better piece)
* Read a book of your choice. Submit an authentic reflection which includes insight into author style and choice. Must be 1-2 pages in length.  Clear your book selection with me on/by THURSDAY.  IF you do not clear your book - I will not accept your reflection.
* 5-10 pages of your own writing/poems/independent endeavors - come and speak with me if you want more information on this...

Here is our tentative class schedule:

Monday
* Sestinas - We will experiment with this poetic format in class...you will write your own Sestina draft which will be due on TUESDAY for a credit/no credit grade

Tuesday
* Workshop with Rolland (from Glassless Minds)
* Rolland will share his insight and experience with Spoken Word
* You will produce your own poem based on an in-class writing activity - a draft will be due on WEDNESDAY for a credit/no credit grade

Week #11 - Spoken Word, Socratic, a Gallary Walk, and Inspiration!

Hello Seniors!

This is a quick little update to get us to Tuesday.  Make sure you check back on 11/12 for a more extensive update on our week and our assignments.

I hope you are enjoying your long weekend.  The writing and the risks you are taking are super elevated and noticeable.  I am truly impressed with your Personal Statements and Klosterman Copy content, stylistic choices, purposeful diction, differing syntax, and use of Mentor Text.  I know we are only going to get better as we further embrace the writing, editing and revision process.

As soon as you begin turning in work that has been edited numerous times - you will see your scores skyrocketing.  It is clear that the talent is there - however,  the grit and the tenacity is always a work in progress.

Now...WE will be getting louder than "Louder Than A Bomb".  It is our turn to play with language and delivery - healthily competing against one another.  Please attend class, be a part of all the activities, and continue to write and explore your life's terrain.

There will be more information available when you check back concerning future writing assignments and opportunities.  Office Hours will be on Wednesday/Thursday - so make sure to speak with me - now is the time to express any concerns you have.  Grades will close on 11/22...the same day we head to Thanksgiving Break.  Please advocate for yourself.

TUESDAY
* Socratic Seminar - Engage in an adult themed conversation - demonstrate critical thinking and inspire your classmates to do the same.
* Be ready with the texts you were asked to read and annotate.  Your participation and insight is crucial - a failure to speak, ask questions, or offer text insight will result in a ZERO.  You miss out on this opportunity if you are not in class...which will affect your grade as well.
* Texts:
"I Wanna Hear A Poem" - Steve Coleman,
"If" - Rudyard Kipling,
"I'll Be Knocking Out Goddamn Poetry....Flight" - Sean Adams
"Pretty Good" - Anonymous

Continue to write and reflect.  Be present, be critical,  and realize that EVERYTHING is worth writing about.

You are a tremendous talent.  I believe in you.

Week #4 - WI#4 - Soul Food, WRG's, and Glassless Minds

Hello Seniors,

This week we will work on our Writing Invite #4 - telling our own unique stories of sprituality and connection.  Try out different ideas, styles, and paragraph purposes.  Make sure to indicate how you are using these tools by highlighting techniques you are using.  Be creative, personalize your writing process, get the assistance you need, and write!  You must be showing proof that you are using your Mentor Text.

We will visit a variety of other writing prompts that will allow you to express yourself  as well. Take risks, share, and learn from one another.

Week #1 - A Brand New School Year

Hello and Welcome to Writers Workshop!

This blog will be your go to for assignments, updates, and deadlines.  Please take advantage of this resource.  If you are absent - this should be where you check in for any missed writings and assignments.  You are a young adult and thus will be treated asuch.  It is your duty to look out for yourself, and it is my duty to teach and guide you.

This will be a terrific year for you to grow as a writer and as an individual as you prepare to exit high school and take on the world.  I will urge you to take stock of your life and to write authentically and in the most genuine way possible.  You will have lots of freedom with your topic choices - however I will be expecting you to experiment with different genre, styles and techniques on a frequent basis - this means ALL THE TIME.

We will read a variety of mentor text so that you can see what different writers do.  I will encourage you to try on these styles and to make them your own.

This will be unlike any class you have taken - however our time together is important and valuable and even though we will "play" with language and words - the art of writing (and writing well) is our business.  This means I will expect your very best on a daily basis and thus you will be assessed for your intrinsic abilities and consistent involvement within our writing communities.

I look forward to seeing you improve and mature.
I look forward to hearing your voice and perspective.
Please continue to check the blog - as we begin our writing assignments this week.

Write On.
