Week #12 - Welcome Back!

Hello Sophomores!

Here is the update for the week:

It was great seeing you all today.  Your writing is awesome and the poetry activity was very cool.  It is great to hear so many voices in class.  I hope that reviewing the rubric and seeing a solid example of the expository article will assist you in completing your work. I appreciate how well behaved and attentive you are always.

Tuesday - Bring TWO copies of your article for editing, rewrites, and peer revision.  Failure to do so will result in a no credit grade for the day.  You cannot print during class time.

* Article writing workshop after school during Tutoring/Office Hours!  Get the assistance you need.  Print if you need to as well.

Wednesday - Expository Articles due.  No late work.  Make sure to include your rubric and highlights/annotations that you want me to specifically pay attention.  Your expository efforts which you are most proud of achieving. We will participate in a Gallery Walk - you will get to read your classmates articles and comment accordingly.

Thursday - Online Expository Test.  10 questions to see how well you retained some main ideas from our unit.  You will have selected informational text to navigate and then answer multiple choice questions accordingly.

Friday.  We will begin our Drama Unit.  Court is in session! Welcome to "12 Angry Men" - this a great play with tons of room for analysis and discussion.

* We will be starting up our second session of our Book Groups.  A library date is yet to be determined - but is likely to be Thurs/Fri.  Have your ID with you.  Some groups will have choices (based on your efforts last time around) - others will have a specific reading selection. Your first meeting will be Monday 12/10.  I will expect you to come with notes and questions for an authentic discussion.

Work hard and play hard.  12 week grades close this Friday.  Speak with me if you have any concerns - your last minute issues ARE NOT my issues.  I appreciate your patience with returning work - though please note that you can get any piece of writing back at any time if you ask me in advance at the appropriate time.  Some of you have been doing that the entire semester.

Please know that I believe in you and expect your work to show improvement and growth always.

Be good.

Week #10 - Becoming Expository Experts!

Hello Sophomores!

We have nine school days until Thanksgiving Break!  Are you doing the very best you can?  Are you understanding all the learning taking place in class?  Are you able to do the work on your own?  Take a minute to reflect and then decide how you want to go about these next two weeks.  Remember - I am assessing your efforts every single day.  I look for consistency, diligence, focus, work completion, and improvement. Bring your best!

This week we will continue to work with some different articles seeking text structure, evidence, appeals, and charting/annotating for understanding.  We will also decide on our own individual Expository ideas/topics (this will be discussed in class on Tuesday) - begin searching for articles that will support your own writing, giving your information the credibility it needs and deserves.

Please do not miss class.  Make sure to communicate and email if you are absent.  Tutoring/Office Hours are on Tuesday and Wednesday after school.  Please come get the assistance you need.  Grades are being updated and work will be returned.  Check your folders in class.  Your investment in your own daily learning will attribute highly to your class grade.

You should be reading your Group Book every night.  Many of you need to catch up! Most had none to very little notes or questions for discussion. Last week was unacceptable.  Make better choices this week.  See Friday.

Here is our tentative schedule.

Monday - Article in Groups.  Groups will receive different articles to read and annotate.  Students will show proof of structure, evidence, appeals, and credibility.  Students will produce individual summaries as an exit slip to show completion and understanding.

Tuesday - Article in Partners.  Partners will receive different articles to read and annotate.  Students will show proof of structure, evidence, appeals, and credibility.  Students will produce individual summaries as an exit slip to show completion and understanding.

Preview Process Writing Prompt - brainstorm ideas. Complete the form below.  Provide information concerning your own Expository writing idea. You must gain approval of your topic/idea from me. This must be completed before WEDNESDAY.  Failure to complete this form will result in a zero.
Fill out this form:

Wednesday -Individual Article Expository Quiz. You will receive an article to read an annotate.  You will show proof of structure, evidence, appeals, and credibility.  You will answer short answers questions as well as produce an individual summary.  See handout - the quiz will follow the same structure used this previous week - as well as Mon/Tues.  Be ready.  Practice.  Use your own articles and annotations - the ones you are using for your own individual expository writing.

Thursday - Individual Work Time.  You may use the class computers to write or search for related information to support your writing.  You can ask for individual assistance.  Please utilize the class time.  Use all of your previous work efforts as models and guides for structure, evidence, appeals, all the while establishing credibility.  This process writing piece will be due on Tuesday 11/26.

Friday - Book Group Meeting #2.  You must have proof of notes and a minimum of THREE questions to receive credit this week.  Last week was unacceptable.  You need to have read what you and group have decided and some sort of evidence that you are processing themes, characters, author choice MUST be present.

Please work hard this week.  Practice your craft.  This work takes time and patience.
Extra Credit opportunities expire on 11/16.  See previous posts regarding "Perks of Being...."
